The Saudi Stopover: Four Free Days Hiding Inside Your Layover

Every week, thousands of Pakistani travellers transit Jeddah or Riyadh and experience Saudi Arabia through a terminal window. The 96-hour stopover visa turns that window into a door — how the mechanism works, and where it catches people.

Here's a sentence that would have sounded absurd a decade ago: Saudi Arabia wants you to visit — badly enough to waive its visa fee while you're on your way somewhere else. The stopover visa does exactly that, and almost nobody transiting through the Kingdom knows it exists.

01 /What the visa actually is

It's exactly what it sounds like — permission to leave the airport during a layover — but the details are where it gets interesting. The visa fee itself is waived; you pay only a small processing charge. The visa stays valid for ninety days from issue, but your time in the Kingdom is capped at ninety-six hours: four full days. You can apply up to ninety days before you travel, your passport needs six months' validity, and you must hold a confirmed onward ticket out of Saudi Arabia. Four days is not a stretch-your-legs visa. It's a genuinely usable short holiday bolted onto a flight you were taking anyway.

02 /How you actually get it

The stopover lives inside the booking flow of specific airlines — anchored by Saudia, the flag carrier, with flynas offering it on eligible routes. Book a connecting ticket through the airline's own channels, select the stopover option, and the visa is generated as part of the booking itself. No embassy visit, no separate application queue. That last sentence contains the catch: the visa lives inside the ticket. Book the flight the wrong way — a self-connected itinerary, or a booking that skips the stopover option — and the visa does not exist. Children are added to a parent's booking rather than applying separately, and eligibility shifts by route.

03 /What ninety-six hours buys you

  • Jeddah is the easiest sell: Al-Balad, the UNESCO-listed old town of coral-stone houses and wooden rawasheen balconies, a corniche that runs for kilometres along the Red Sea, and a food culture that rewards an unhurried evening.
  • Riyadh is the bigger playground: Diriyah, the mud-brick birthplace of the Saudi state, restored into a sprawling heritage-and-dining district — and Edge of the World, the cliff where the desert plateau simply stops, a half-day trip away.
  • And for many Pakistani travellers, the real headline: Umrah is permitted on the stopover visa. If you've ever wanted to fold Umrah into a trip you were already taking, this is the mechanism for it.

04 /The honest catches

  • The clock includes your layover window — the counter starts when you clear immigration, not when you reach a hotel. A twenty-hour layover leaves a comfortable overnight; a six-hour layover leaves you nothing.
  • The visa is single entry: once you exit the Kingdom, you're done.
  • The rules are airline- and route-dependent, and Saudi visa policy keeps evolving as the country builds its tourism sector — always confirm the current version before you plan around it.

“A layover is what a flight does to you. A stopover is what you do with the flight.”

05 /The smart way to use it

The travellers who get the most from this visa build the trip backwards: they pick the destination and the days first, then find the Saudia or flynas connection that gives them the longest legitimate window. That's a booking puzzle — and solving booking puzzles is literally what we do.

Stopovers are the most underused trick in Pakistani travel — and the Kingdom just made one of them free.
