Europe's New Border Rules: One Applies to You, One Doesn't

Billions of words have been written about Europe's “new visa requirement” — almost none of them mention the part that matters for a Pakistani passport. One of the two new systems applies to you; the other doesn't. Knowing which is which saves real money.

You've seen the headlines: Europe has a “new visa requirement”. Billions of words have been written about ETIAS and the Entry/Exit System, and almost none of them mention the part that actually matters for a Pakistani passport. One of these systems applies to you. One does not. Knowing which is which saves you real money and confusion.

01 /The system that does apply: EES

Europe's Entry/Exit System is live and rolling out progressively at the external borders of the European countries using it. It replaces manual passport stamping with a digital register: every non-EU national admitted for a short stay — Schengen visa holders included, which means Pakistani travellers — gets a record created with facial image and fingerprints (fingerprints from age twelve), entry and exit dates, and the place of entry.

  • Your first entry into the Schengen area now involves registering your face and fingerprints at the counter or a self-service kiosk — the first crossing takes a few minutes longer than it used to.
  • After registration, many airports let you cross through automated gates, faster than the old manual queues.
  • Passport stamps are disappearing — the record is digital now.
  • The system counts your ninety-in-180 days automatically. Overstay, and it surfaces instantly at the next border — no ambiguity to argue with, and no “the officer didn't notice” luck to rely on.

None of this costs you anything, and none of it changes your visa requirements. It changes your border experience: arrive with a little extra time for the first entry, and keep your 90/180 arithmetic clean — the machine now does the arithmetic too.

02 /The system that doesn't: ETIAS

ETIAS — the European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is what the headlines are actually about. And here's the twist: ETIAS is for travellers from the visa-exempt countries — the US, UK, Canada, Japan and so on — the passports that stroll into Europe without a visa. When it begins operations (the EU has shifted this date before, so treat any version you read as earliest-possible, not promised), those travellers will need to pre-authorise online before boarding.

Pakistani passport holders do not need ETIAS. You already need a full Schengen visa — ETIAS changes nothing for you. You cannot “apply early for ETIAS”, and anyone selling you ETIAS “assistance” for a Pakistani passport is selling you nothing. File that under things that sound like a scam because they are one.

But — and this is where it gets personally relevant — check your family's passports. The cousin on a US passport joining the family trip to Italy? He'll need ETIAS once it launches. The brother-in-law with British residency but a Pakistani passport? He follows the visa route with you. Mixed-passport families are exactly where the confusion, and the wasted fees, live.

“Europe didn't add a requirement for Pakistani passports. It added a trap for people who assume it did.”

03 /The practical checklist

  • First Schengen entry: expect biometric registration, budget a few extra minutes, and don't panic when they photograph you.
  • Kids under twelve: no fingerprints, but they're still photographed and registered.
  • The 90/180 rule is tracked precisely now — plan Europe trips with the arithmetic done in advance, not “we'll see how the stamps look”.
  • Mixed-passport trips: confirm who needs what — visa-holder, ETIAS-holder, resident — before anyone books.
  • The Schengen visa itself remains the process Pakistanis know: appointments, documents, the works — with requirements varying by consulate.
